Programa / Agenda
13h30 – Reception
13h50 – Opening – João Magalhães
14h00 – Reiki Ryoho – Frank Arjava Petter
The practice of the basic Japanese Reiki Techniques, Gassho, Kenyoku and Reiji Ho as a valuable practice.
14h50 – Martial Arts and Reiki – Nathalie Jaspar
Mikao Usui’s family was hatamoto samurai (the highest rank). The samurai era ended just three years after his birth, which means he grew up surrounded by the budō ideology. Over time, samurais created what we know as modern martial arts. In this talk, we will explore concepts from sword-based martial arts that can help us deepen our understanding of the Reiki practice.
15h40 – The Historical Context of Usui Reiki Ryoho through the Poems of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken – Rika Saruhashi
It is necessary to know the historical context of the time when Usui Reiki Ryoho was born; only in this way can we fully understand this method that surged in the tumultuous time of the Taisho era. Because if it had occurred in a different time and space, it would have developed differently. By studying the coetaneous of Usui sensei, Emperor Meiji, and his wife, Empress Shoken, especially their waka poems, we can get to know the thinking and feelings of the people who lived in the Meiji era. Emperor Meiji expressed his thoughts and sentiments through almost 100 000 gyosei and his spouse through 30 000 miuta. Usui sensei used to admire Emperor Meiji, and after founding the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai incorporated some gyosei of the emperor Meiji as food for the soul. We will look deeper at the thoughts that influenced the Japanese public of the Meiji and Taisho eras to comprehend Usui Reiki Ryoho better
16h30 – Coffee-break
17h30 – Inspirations from the Japanese women who helped Reiki practice to survive – Silke Kleeman and Amanda Jayne
Amanda and Silke will talk about four of the women featured in their book, Women in Reiki. Chie Hayashi, Chiyoko Yamaguchi, Hawayo Takata and Kimiko Koyama dedicated their lives to using and teaching Reiki. Learn about stories and events in the lives of these women that helped to carry Reiki through some difficult times and can inspire us as teachers and practitioners today.
18h20 – Takata – a historic figure – René Vögtli
World War II comes to a barbarous end with two nuclear bombs in 1945. During the war, many Reiki practitioners vanished. The promising development initiated by Mikao Usui in the 1920ies got as much as extinguished. The grip of the occupying powers after the war drove the remnants into hiding and the practice was seen a house-hold remedy at best.
Elsewhere, in Hawaii, in a battle for survival, Hawayo Takata, managed to evade the US concentration camps to go treat people with Reiki. She even opened her own practice and later she practiced and taught on the mainland, too. Thus, she single-handedly laid the foundation for Reiki’s unfolding leading to the status quo.
While Takata sensei was still alive, the potential field of global expansion gravitated around her. By the time she died in 1980 it burst open much like a rose-bud does. She left 22 Reiki Masters behind. And there was dissonance amongst them. That, too, is part of Hayayo Takata’s legacy.
The rapid expansion of Reiki into the world, the tension field of dissonance containing the controversy about Reiki styles, human ambitions and egos was painful for many. But it was also the catalyst for research, the re-emergence of ‘Japanese’ Reiki and – eventually – how it came about that we are all here today.
“During my presentation I would like to take a look at this historic figure, not so much from a historian’s point of view but from the perspective of my work as an ‘agent for reconciliation’.”
René Vögtli has led a 16 hours interview with Hayayo Takata’s grand-daughter, Phyllis Lei Furumoto from which he will show exclusive video clips pertaining to Hawayo Takata but also to her daughter Alice Takata who played an often underestimated role in the history of Reiki.
19h10 – End of Sessions (encerramento)
